Aeon Flux

Aeon Flux is a 2005 post-apocalyptic film starring Charlize Theron, Sophie Okoneda, Marton Csokas and Frances McDormand. It was fun to look at. Plot, well, not so much. Our DVD has what look like some good special features, including commentary by people who were actually involved in the making of the film, but we didn't watch them tonight.

trailer:

Variety calls it "spectacularly silly". Moria says it's "not much more than Lara Croft, Tomb Raider (2001) does Zardoz (1974)." Ebert and Roeper give it The Wagging Finger of Shame for not screening it for critics before its general release. The New York Times titles its review "Aeon Flux (2005) In 2415, There are Still Bad Hair Days" and has a few other snide remarks before closing with this:
As it all approaches a hectic climax, Mr. Postlethwaite - whose role in this I will not even begin to try to explain - remarks, "I've been waiting 400 years for this day." I knew how he felt, though I'd only been there for an hour and a half.

I've never been one for live-action anime. Even "The Matrix" underwhelmed me although I liked some of the visuals of that film (How could you not? Some of them came from the movie "Dark City").

I remember seeing this when it was a cartoon on MTV. It was animation trying to be oh-so-serious anime. Nothing more then the usual "sword-wielding-disciplined-guy-beating-the-modern-day-firearm-wielding-guy" action.

Unfortunately, because the world is in a constant glut of (A). Testosterone, (B). 14-year olds and their mental equivalents & (C). Caffinated products, I expect this phenomenon to continue for quite some time.

  2. I had someone actually describe Aeon Flux to me as a strong female character. Yeah, well. Not by any definition I've ever used.

I asked The Younger Son if it got any good reviews, and he said if it had surely they'd have excerpted one for the DVD cover. He called it "terrible".

I've never seen the tv show.
