Man of the West

Man of the West is a 1958 western directed by Anthony Mann and starring Gary Cooper, Julie London, Lee J. Cobb, and Arthur O'Connell. Also in this are Jack Lord, Royal Dano, and Robert J. Wilke. I watched it free on Tubi at this link. It is critically well-regarded and shows up on many "best of" lists of Western films.

trailer:

Senses of Cinema has a thought-provoking consideration. Deep Focus Review calls it a masterpiece and says, "Mann’s work, though not extensively recognized as that of an auteur in the United States, has been praised overseas by French cineastes François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard as that of a genius-artist." The Guardian calls it Mann's Western masterpiece. TCM has an overview. 93% of Rotten Tomatoes critics gave it positive reviews.

is played by Jack Lord. I think I'll get a cup of my own and visit with the T Stands for Tuesday bloggers. Please choose your beverage of choice and join us.

  3. This sounds like a good one. However, not sure if I have ever seen it or not. I've seen so many 1950's westerns; they make me think of my dad who loved them. Have a happy T day.

  8. I'm not a huge fan of westerns, but this sounds good, since I've heard of several of these actors. Thanks for sharing this with us for T this Tuesday, too, dear friend.

  13. I have also seen so many westerns growing up on Saturday afternoons that I am sure I probably have seen this one. Always did like the ones with Gary Cooper.

Any western with Jimmy Stewart in would be my favorite because I would watch anything at all with Jimmy in it--LOL! :)

  14. You always stir up great memories with your posts. We love old movies around here! Just last week I watched a Jimmy Stewart movie I had never seen; Firecreek. All the people that were in are gone, now. 1968. I know your movies are older, but this is still over 50 years ago! LOL Happy belated T Day.

  16. I watched this about 2 months ago (Hubby is a western movie freak and I had no choice as he would not change the channel). I ended up liking it as it showed polar evil and polar goodness, the possibility of turning your life around (the main character was once evil like the others but now the good guy), and the stupidity of people (like why didn't he scope out that house a bit better in the first place). She is lovely too. Great post - thanks for reminding me of this movie. Happy late T-day!
