The NYT calls it a "Poignant Romance". Emmanuel Levy has an article about the film and its Oscar nominations. Leonard Maltin says, "Boyer’s character is a manipulator and a heel, yet still compelling because of the actor’s charisma."
DVD Beaver says,
A moving and thoughtful film with a wonderful script (co-written by Billy Wilder), Hold back the Dawn benefits from evocative performances by Boyer and de Havilland, and an over-arching sense of romantic melancholy. An enduring classic of its era, Leisen's film was nominated for no-less than six Academy AwardsRotten Tomatoes has a critics consensus rating of 100%.
Might have to make some time for this

DeleteAnother film I've never seen, but it sounds good. Valerie
ReplyDeleteYes, this one was unusually good, I thought. And the setting was different.
DeleteI'm not into romance, but this actually sounds good. I'll try to take time to watch it once I have a bit of time on my hands.
ReplyDeleteRomance ain't my thing either ;) but this one appealed to me.
DeleteI think I would like this -- I'm a huge de Havilland fan and I Boyer, too. We're supposed to have snow today or tomorrow (probably tomorrow) and cold. Might be just the antidote! Thanks for the link!
ReplyDeleteThey're predicting a possible frost here for Wednesday night! What a strange Spring it has been.
