McCabe & Mrs. Miller

McCabe & Mrs. Miller is a 1971 western directed by Robert Altman and starring Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, René Auberjonois, Shelley Duvall, and Keith Carradine. Most people seem to love this movie, but I'm just not a fan. I think my main objection is that there's so much chatter. And it's one of the saddest, most hopeless movies I've ever seen.

The New York Times has a negative review. The Guardian says, "this beautiful, oddly affecting film is one of the three best Altman movies."

Slant Magazine gives it 4 out of 4 stars and says, "If not the greatest western ever made, McCabe & Mrs. Miller could be the most authentic representation of wilderness life ever put on screen." Empire Online gives it 5 out of 5 stars and concludes, "They say that great actors are never knowingly caught acting; Altman's best movies are similarly effortless - experiences to be lived in, rather than simply watched."

Roger Ebert has it on his list of "great movies". Rotten Tomatoes has a critics rating of 89%.

  1. I don't know this film, but I like the actors and actresses who star in it. Sorry it didn't appeal to you though, but I guess you can't like them all, even if the critics and a lot of other folks like a film or book. What do they know anyhow, right? have a great rest of your weekend. Hugs-Erika

    1. I'm glad I've seen it just because it's so well-known. But so sad!

  2. Too bad you didn't like it, but right now, I would like to see happy, not sad or hopeless films. Thanks for your honest review, though.

    1. I'm not generally a fan of sad movies. I find I hardly ever re-watch them no matter how good they are.

  3. I know I saw this all those years ago but I honestly don't remember much about it other than everything seemed gritty and grimy as you would expect it to have been in real life.

    1. Yes! A more realistic view than all those westerns where clothes don't get dirty and everybody's hair looks like it was just shampooed and styled by a professional lol
