Criterion says, "it has never been outdone for sheer psychological terror". AMC's FilmSite.org has an extensive plot description, calls it "darkly atmospheric" and says it's a "creepy, eerie gothic film". Vanity Fair calls it "an iconic film" and details the curse. The New York Times has a positive review, faulting it only as being not scary enough.
Roger Ebert gives it 4 stars and opens a positive review with this:
Roman Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" is a brooding, macabre film, filled with the sense of unthinkable danger. Strangely enough it also has an eerie sense of humor almost until the end. It is a creepy film and a crawly film, and a film filled with things that go bump in the night. It is very good.Rotten Tomatoes has a critics score of 99%.
I have a brother that collects "classic" horror films - he says Rosemary's Baby goes with The Omen & The Exorcist. He says there are many laughable moments in these movies, humour that most people miss. He's weird like that. I cannot watch scary occult or sci fi movies, it all seems to possible for me.
ReplyDeleteI've seen those, too, but not when they were released. I always avoided horror movies until my oldest son developed an interest and began introducing me to them. I still prefer the eerie/ghost stories like Carnival of Souls and The Haunting to ones featuring blood and gore.
DeleteI have never seen this movie yet either! I'm not one for scary movies, but I think it is a classic so one of these days I should see it. Maybe whenever I get brave. :) Thanks for sharing and recommending. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI avoided the scary movies for most of my life, but later I began broadening my horizons ;)
DeleteI think I have seen this. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI think most have seen it. I'm a hold-back and have a lot of time to make up for. So many movies...
DeleteYes, saw this many years ago. I can imagine it would be a bit dated and I remember it being very slow moving. I am not usually scared by these kinds of movies and often find them amusing in places, too. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember going to see the first Alien movie, thinking it was a science fiction movie lol I avoided horror movies most of my life, but now that I'm watching them I agree with you. They are hardly ever scary. Given that, I'm glad I didn't see this one while I was pregnant ;)
DeleteI've somehow lost the photo I used to have when commenting and don't remember what I did to get it to begin with. Any suggestions on how to recover it or put another one in instead of this gray and white triangle thing I have now?
No clue about the photo. I can't remember where or how I put in my toddler picture--LOL!
ReplyDeletefrustrating lol I want to put my frog back.
