The Summer Patio

I'm enjoying some wine The Daughter left for me. She and Her Hubby have moved to Minnesota and -try as they might- couldn't take everything with them.

*******

Meanwhile in Memphis...

This is the view of our patio from the back door:

Here's the view if you're seated in one of the chairs:

A recent rain:

We attracted the attention of a hawk the other day, and that was exciting!

I was nowhere near the window, and the hawk was at the back of the patio, so I couldn't get very clear photos from so far away.

The Younger Son was here and got video:

Then yesterday another one, we think smaller, came:

The sparrows hid in the coleus.

Please join me over at the weekly T Stands for Tuesday blogger gathering hosted by Bleubeard and Elizabeth.

  2. Oh I like your patio & gardens. Not sure about having such a big hawk visit is good, I worry about the fretting of the smaller birds, but still really cool that he visited & stay a while. The video of the rain - ah now that's a sound of pleasure, it's a gentle woman rain & OH do we need in this area.

    1. The hawks circle high overhead twice a day -they nest nearby- but very rarely come to the patio. I think they probably prefer more open spaces than our patio. I'm thinking our frequent flocking sparrows is what brought them down.

  3. Wine on the patio would be lovely. Your space is such an oasis. I loved listening to the rain and seeing the hawk. Happy T Day!

  4. I always love it when you show your back patio. I want my patio to look like yours, but all I can do is dream, since mine will NEVER look as great as yours. You got lots of rain, too. Is that a new piece I see against the back wall (which I "assume" is the garage)? Is it a bird cage? Love the look and all the incredible groups of flowers you have spaced around the area.

Gee, it's too bad your daughter had to leave the wine (grin). I'm sure you were thrilled, though. I bet you're going to miss her, because MN is a LONG way from TN. That will be a fun road trip next year. Thanks for sharing your incredible back patio, the hawk videos, and your newly gifted wine with us for T this Tuesday, dear friend.

    1. Yes, that our finch flight up against the garage wall. That's probably what first drew the hawk's attention. She's about 14 hours away, and we're determined not to travel during the pandemic. She's sending me photos of where she's putting everything as she gets settled in. They have a bigger yard there, which will be perfect for their dogs :)

    2. We can always hope the pandemic will be sufficiently curbed by this time next year. But not if Trump is still in office.

  6. Your patio is looking good. Nice to see - and hear - the rain and the hawks, they must have been looking for a take-out meal! Wine is a great idea, good that it got left behind! Happy T Day, Valerie

  8. Wine is awesome for the patio-a nice gift for sure. and your patio space is green! we have had no rain and extreme hot so everything is pretty brown and not looking so good here. That is awesome to have the hawk visitors-we would see them at our woods home. Our eagles are back now sitting up in that tall tree again. we missed them while they were raising their youngsters. I enjoyed the videos Happy T wishes Kathy

    1. I have to water the pots every day to keep them green. I've heard people say they've seen eagles here, but they're actually Mississippi kites. You get real eagles, which is sooo exciting!

  10. a nice glass of wine sitting in your lovely oasis filled with plants- and even rain- a perfect summer setting! We get several types of hawks but once I get a good look to try and identify the type I chase them away- I hate seeing one get a bird and leave all the feathers behind for me to clean up:( Happy T day!

    1. The plants are wonderful until the time comes to bring them in for the winter lol The hawks coming onto the patio is a rare thing. I've never seen evidence they've ever caught a bird here.

  13. I enjoyed all the videos, especially the sound of the rain and when one hawk took flight. Does this mean your drought has ended? I hope so. The patio looks lovely - a very nice place to sit and enjoy a glass of that cabernet sauvignon. I hope your daughter an SIL are happy in MN. The winter weather may come as a shock!

    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen

    1. I'm actually not sure about where we stand drought-wise...

They found a rental house with a garage, so they're prepared in one way lol Yes, I can't imagine what it'll be like for them. Exciting :) Maybe I'll retire close to them and see for myself ;)

  17. Thank you for inviting us to your patio. It looks like a really nice place to relax. Yes, I'll have a glass of wine with you. That wine looks nice.
I was really surprised to see a hawk on your fence (I suppose you were too). How exciting.
I'm sorry I'm late in commenting. My laptop has decided it does no longer wants to use Chrome or Internet Explorer and I have not been able to comment. I have an iPhone but I've tried commenting before and most comments don't arrive. So I am looking for someone to do me a blog on Wordpress (the free version). If you know of anyone who could do that for me and is reasonably priced, please let me know. I have tried myself but I have not succeeded.
    Happy belated T-Day,
    Hugs,

  19. Your patio looks so relaxing. I haven't managed to get to that stage yet, so I am slightly envious.

I get visits from a sparrowhawk who perches on the fence but I haven't been successful in taking any photos yet.

  20. Your patio looks lovely. And wow for Hawks showing up. I wonder what attracted them. They circle high overhead where I am, but sometimes I see feather evidence that they got one of the birds at my bird feeder. :-( Happy Belated T-Day!

    1. We have (or had) caged birds on the patio which drew their attention once they got here, but I think our large sparrow gatherings are what attracted their attention from up in the sky.

  21. Great videos. Thank you for sharing. We lived in Memphis when our son was born. That was fifty years ago! LOL But we did enjoy our two years there. We were there when Martin Luther King was shot. That was quite a thing. Great post. Happy Day!

    1. A dark day in Memphis history. If you're ever back here you could do worse than to tour the Civil Rights Museum, which is located in the Lorraine where King was killed. Especially since you lived here then I bet it'd be a powerful experience.

  22. Your patio area is a wonderful haven of peace - I'm not surprised the hawks like it! Just hope that they don't find any little birds there! Ive been busy - but just with mundane stuff, so I do apologise for being a late visitor! Hugs, Chrisx

    1. Thx! It's not really open enough for the hawks, but all the sparrow activity is probably what draws their attention. They are rare on the patio.
