The Misfits

The Misfits is a 1961 western written by Arthur Miller, directed by John Huston, and starring Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter, Eli Wallach, and Kevin McCarthy.

trailer:

BFI explains what went into making it a classic and says, "As it happened, it turned out to be the last completed film for both Gable (who died just 10 days after filming finished) and Monroe (who lived on for another year and a half). For his part, Clift had only two further major roles before his own demise in 1966." FilmSite has an article describing it as "a poignant drama about the death of the old West". The Guardian gives it 4 out of 5 stars.

TCM has information. Rotten Tomatoes has a positive critics consensus of 100%.

  2. Many years ago there was a Marilyn Monroe festival and I went to see "The Misfits" but I couldn't stand it and walked out. (This was in the old days before any home-viewing equipment was invented, so a festival would be one's only chance to see an old film.) I think I watched the whole film again on a later occasion.

    1. It's not a typical western. I'm not a big Clark Gable fan, but I'm glad I've seen this.

  5. I hope I get credit for at least HEARING about it. It sounds like the old west must have died with this film.

    1. This one doesn't take place in the old west and isn't a typical "western" film. I think it's worth watching for the performances of the actors. It's not one I'd recommend for people just starting out watching westerns ;)

    1. I have a short list of saddest films ever, so my "depressing" bar is not one this film comes close to clearing ;)

  8. I've seen it before. It's a good film. And especially sad when you think of it being Gable's last and near the end of Marilyn's career.

    1. Yes, it altered how I saw it I think, knowing that ahead of time.

  9. I have seen this one many years ago. It didn't thrill me, but now that I am older and it dealing with the death of the old west, maybe that's why I wasn't crazy about it. It was certainly not Gables best film and not a way to wrap up a career.

    1. It gets praised as a fine performance by Gable, but I'm not a fair judge of that. He's never been one of my favorites. I'm more a Robert Mitchum/James Coburn fan.
