Curtis Cemetery

We saw this cemetery in Lake Barclay State Park, just by the side of the road next to a water tower and stopped to take a look. It was overgrown and not at all well cared for:

except for this recent marker honoring a Revolutionary War militiaman Russell Curtis 1757-1834, and even this grave is being over-taken by weeds:

I think this is whose rights the 2nd Amendment:
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
was meant to protect.

  1. I love old cemeteries. Too bad its so over grown. Its like they've almost been forgotten. Oh and I wanted to the mention (regarding your comment question) the Epitaph book about the OK Corral is very good. Its interesting to see all those famous names -Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday, come to life in a little different aspect than the tough western way. I recommend it. Hugs-Erika

    1. We've followed some signs trying to find old cemeteries we never could locate, wandering gravel roads out in the middle of nowhere. We love finding them right on the road. Places like this show the value of cemetery associations and making sure your descendants live near where you're buried. It is a shame when they get this overgrown.

    1. There are a lot of small family cemeteries out in the country. I'm sure I have ancestors buried in similar places. Thx! :)

  5. Interesting old cemetery. Some of my relatives are buried in an old cemetery that is only maintained by those who visit. I don't live nearby but family members who do are pretty faithful about keeping things up.

    1. We aren't sure what to do when we come across cemeteries that aren't maintained. That new stone for the soldier makes me think somebody must come out here every once in a while anyway. But it's a family cemetery, and there may not be any family left in the area.
