White Cup and Saucer:
is an 1864 painting by Henri Fantin-Latour who was born on January 14, 1836, and who died on this date in 1904. Wikipedia says he is "best known for his flower paintings and group portraits of Parisian artists and writers". According to Artcyclopedia, the Dixon Gallery here in Memphis has one of his works, Nature Morte (Still Life With Flowers), 1869:
You can see more of his work online here.
I have a couple of white cup and saucer sets, and drank out of this one to celebrate Tea Tuesday:
The pattern is Lenox Solitaire, and this is my good china.
Please check out the T(ea) party over at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog. Share a drink and see what folks are up to.

The painting of the white cup is beautifully done. I really thought it was a photo of a cup at first glance. I like you china pattern as well. Thanks for introducing me to an artist I was not familiar with.

I too thought the white cup was a photograph. It is amazing :D As is the fruit and flowers! I can feel the velvet texture of the peach skin and the cherries look so delicious :) I am going to look at the link you shared. Thank you. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for your lovely comment on my post. Happy T Day :D
The cup painting is fantastic, I only know his flower paintings, which are very beautiful. Your cup is gorgeous, too, it's lovely to drink from fine china! Have a great week and a happy T Day, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteHis work is great and at first look I also thought the cup and saucer where a photo and not a painting. Thanks for sharing. I like your white cup also. My mother had that pattern once upon a time. Knowing her she still has it in the attic..she never throws anything away.
ReplyDeleteWhat an elegant cup and saucer (your set). Beautiful. Can I come over for a cuppa?
ReplyDeleteThe painting is very good too. Looks real doesn't it.
Thanks for visiting,
Have a good week,

The cup painting is gorgeous. I have cups similar to your Lennox, also my good china....LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog and leaving me a comment this week, always good to hear from the T-gang!
Both the cup in the painting and your china cup have interesting shapes. I like both of them! Happy T Day!
ReplyDeleteI was happy to see these paintings because I have seen several works by Fantin-Latour. I first caught his art at the Nelson-Atkins in Kansas City, Mo. Then I saw his art at the Art Institute in Chicago, and I probably have some digital art (or did before my hard drive crashed a few years ago) of his paintings at the Norton Simon in Pasadena. I really enjoyed his art and often studied it when I lived in the Kansas City area.
ReplyDeleteYour lovely china certainly compliments the art today. I was certainly impressed. I've been told good china should be used and not kept squirreled away. We all have a tendency to treat it far too precious, but I seem to break something every time I use my good china and crystal.
Thanks for sharing these lovely paintings and your beautiful china with us for T this Tuesday.
what a lovely tie in with the painting of the teacup and the one you're drinking from. Love the still life and flowers! Happy T day!
ReplyDeleteFantin-Latour is really good with the whites, I think: the shirt of his self-portrait, the white-dressed lady, and those white roses! And that cup. Life, enhanced. Yours is very, very elegant. The kind of thing one drinks from on a wedding day, perhaps? Happy T Day!
ReplyDeleteLovely sharing and focus here as always.
ReplyDeleteA while ago a wonderful British friend led me to appreciate all white china ...
mixing patterns is really charming too.
I do have a weakness for all kinds of china (among other things ;-) )
Happy T Day from Virginia
