Favorite 1920's Horror Films

The Vault of Horror lists their top 10:
1. Nosferatu (1922)
2. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1920)
3. The Golem (1920)
4. The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
5. Faust (1926)
6. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
7. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)
8. Haxan (1922)
9. Dr. Mabuse (1922)
10. The Man Who Laughs (1928)

I've linked to my own posts if I have them.

I like this list. I'd love to see the last 2 but just haven't gotten to them yet.

Good list. I might substitute "The Head of Janus" for "The Man Who Laughs," and would have to bump something to include "Waxworks," which can be downright creepy. I'd love to see all these on your list -- or mine -- again.

  2. Lesseee, I've seen 1,2,4,6,and 9. This is a good list. Gotta love German Expressionism.

Also, I've seen Edison's Frankenstein film, which is a very interesting take on the subject.

  3. Oh, and Mabuse is not so much a horror film as a politcal/mystery thriller with psychic overtones.

  4. I've seen the Edison Frankenstein and agree with you. I was surprised by it and was glad I discovered it.

Thanks for the heads-up on Mabuse. Criterion has a Mabuse DVD, but I haven't looked at it closely and I'm not sure what's included on it. Criterion editions are so expensive.
