Macario

Macario is a 1960 Mexican supernatural drama based on an old legend.

The Museum of Modern Art has an article which says,
Aimed at an international audience—and indeed, it was the first Mexican film to be nominated for an Academy Award, as well as Mexico’s entry in the 1960 Cannes Film Festival—Macario takes the form of a macabre fable about an impoverished peasant (Ignacio López Tarso) who is kind to a mysterious stranger on the Day of the Dead, and is rewarded with the power to heal the sick.
TCM has an overview. Rotten Tomatoes has a consensus critics score of 100%.

  3. ...who knew that being kind to mysterious strangers would reward you with the power to heal the sick? This might be something to try.

  4. This sounds fascinating. I am glad it had such great reviews and won awards seeing it was from Mexico. Which of course has great arts, but not such a good reputation with some people. Happy Halloween Nita.

    1. I've seen some films from Mexico but not many. I was happy to come across this one.

  5. This sounds like St. Stevens or Good King Wenceslas only for Christmas, not Halloween. It sounds good, though.

  6. I finally watched a British film on Roku while Scott was here. He showed me how to use Roku, even though I've had it for several months. I was very disappointed. I've been watching British shows on Freevee. The ads are at most 2 to 2 1/2 minutes. Most are around a minute. NOT the case with Roku. They have 6 to 7 full length ads and the ads are at a very inappropriate time, like during a fight or a heated conversation which continues after the ads. I don't care for this "always free" thing on Roku. It's a time buster.

    1. Roku has different channels, and some are worse about ads than others, or at least as I recall. I find quite a lot searching Roku for horror, but they usually lead to sources like Tubi. Tubi is a treasure, but the ads there can be annoying, too. I haven't watched much on Freevee, since I access it through Amazon Prime and there's always something commercial-free I'd rather watch. YouTube and Internet Archive are great, but sometimes the movies don't stay there long.

    2. I was sticking with the Always Free option on Roku because I don't want to pay to watch a film. I get Freevee on Prime. Mostly what I want to watch are British mysteries, but I don't want to pay for Britbox or Acorn until I have exhausted all the freebies. So far I haven't watched any movies, just various series with, as a rule, more than one season.

    3. I think I was confused about what you were talking about. I don't have Roku through my tv but through a device I bought for about $25 at Target. I access all my streaming services through it, so when I turn it on there are buttons for all the services I subscribe to (both free and paid). I hadn't even tried to watch any of the Roku-specific content so didn't realize the ads were so oppressive. I do like the Roku search feature. The free things I watch are almost always through Tubi.

    4. I can highly recommend finding Sky News on Roku and adding it. It's free. It provides in-depth reporting on British issues but also world news.

    5. Scott bought my Roku device. It was $4.95 and included a "channel changer" and a small device that attaches to my smart tv. I had no idea there were two types of Roku devices. Mine is definitely attached to my TV.

I get Sky News on cable at the moment, but only for about four hours a day. Yes, I still have my cable, but am trying to wean myself off it. So far, Roku is not very helpful, but I'm definitely enjoying Freevee on Prime. I am almost afraid to use Prime for anything else, but Scott told me Prime will warn me if the item I want to watch is not free. Scott keeps the amazon end and I keep the movie/tv end.

    6. Yes, Prime will alert you if it's not free. I'm sure you'll grow more comfortable with it. It took us a while. Prime is where we're watching the The Rings of Power (the Lord of the Rings prequel series) and much more, all free with the Prime subscription.

If you search on Roku for Sky News you can add that channel to your Roku home page. It's a 24/7 channel. I also have Tubi there. Both those are free. I was surprised at how much was freely available through Roku. I had no idea. I've found so much! There are free channels you can add that focus on old movies like old film noir or old monster movies...

    7. I didn't know Roku HAD a homepage. I have SO much to learn. No wonder I've stuck with cable so long.

    8. My Roku device just stays on all the time -it doesn't even have an "off" button- so unless I change the TV to the "TV" setting when I turn on the TV I get the Roku home page. (I can, of course, turn off the tv itself, but if I turn it on it shows the Roku home page.)

On the Roku home page, on the left side in a column, there is a list: "Home" "What to Watch" "Featured Free" "Live TV" "Search" and more. To the right of that column are icons with the channels (both free and the ones I pay for), so that's where I go to access Prime, Netflix, Tubi, SkyTV, etc. I hardly ever watch the actual tv anymore lol except for a local channel where I watch morning news. I've forgotten how I accessed Prime before we got Roku lol

I understand how long it takes to adopt and get used to new technology. We had cable 'til a couple of years ago.

    9. I asked my son -that's my go-to solution for tech questions ;) - and he says your Roku remote control should have a "home" button. He's handy to have around lol If you press that button maybe you'll see the home screen I describe...

    10. Yes, I found that page and that's how I searched for British shows on the "featured free" option. But my Roku is tied to my Fire TV. I can only access it through Fire TV and Prime for some reason. I think it's how Scott set it up for me. I know I have a different changer for cable, Fire TV, and Roku. Each has its own quirks. and ways to access different channels.

    11. My smart TV has a home button, but there isn't one on the Roku changer I got. I DO have the list on the left column of my on screen Roku.

    12. Ah, we don't have FireTV, and all our stuff is accessed through the Roku device. That's where I start, even to access Prime and Netflix. Before we had Roku we accessed everything through our DVD player. Our TV is too old to be "smart" ;)
