Enola Holmes

Enola Holmes is a 2020 film based on the first book in a series about Sherlock Holmes' younger sister. It stars Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, Burn Gorman, Frances de la Tour, and Fiona Shaw. I watched it on Netflix. It was fun, and if they make a sequel I'll watch it. It does right by the Holmes characters and has a light touch that would make it suitable for kids as well as adults who don't want their crime and mystery movies quite as blood-soaked as they tend to be these days.

Roger Ebert's site has a positive review. Rotten Tomatoes has a consensus critics score of 91%.

  1. I wanted to see this movie, so thanks for the recommendation ... the trailer does make it look fun & yes to the less blood soaked stuff of today's selections. Directors do seem to like to blow things up as well & chases that go on & on ... I pose the question to myself, but is that a male thing?

    1. I like a variety, so all the big, splashy action and even blood is fine with me, _but_ if that's all there is it gets pretty boring. A take like this that avoids all that is a nice change :)

I thought it was fun. I'll watch (almost) anything with a Holmsian theme and this worked well for many of the reasons you cite.

    1. I tend to think they should just make up their own story, ya know, without messing with a classic ;) But if they're gonna do it this was a good one :)

  4. This sounds good. I prefer mine less blood soaked, too.

FYI: Conjuring 3: I liked it!! (It came out on DVD August 24. I think it's also on HBO or some such, if you have that.)

    1. Cool! I've seen the first Conjuring but not the others. I'll look for it, thanks, and I should see Conjuring 2 while I'm at it.

    1. She is fun, and if they're gonna take liberties like this with known characters I'm glad they were respectful. I look forward to a sequel :)
