We Are What We Are (2013)

We Are What We Are is a 2013 remake of a 2010 Mexican film I haven't seen. It's a horrifying look at what insistence on religious observance past the proper time can bring us to. The music is gorgeous.

trailer:

Slant Magazine gives it 1.5 out of 4 stars and compares it to the original, saying the remake "tailors the story’s basic components to concern the eroding income of a deliriously religious lower-rural American class." The Guardian gives it 2 out of 5 stars and compares it unfavorably with the original.

Roger Ebert gives it 3.5 out of 4 and says, "the serious and respectful tone helps to make for a genuinely creepy moviegoing experience that will attract both serious fans of the genre and those viewers simply looking for a well-told story" and "in terms of smart and serious filmmaking, I would put this film up against any "serious" movie that has come out so far this year and I implore you to give it a chance." Rotten Tomatoes has an 86% critics score.

I watched this one alone.

The Husband is on vacation this week, but the weather has been so hot he hasn't much wanted to do the outdoor activities we had planned. We have instead been watching some of the old monster movies, and he's been choosing to work his way through the old Frankenstein franchise from the beginning. That includes these, for which I have old posts:

The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942)
House of Frankenstein (1944)
House of Dracula (1945)
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

We also re-watched this:

Dracula (1931)

Also, we enjoy, and so re-watch, some of the shows traditionally thought of as being for children, and we watched these while The Husband was on vacation:

The Halloween Tree (1993)
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)

More recent films we've enjoyed re-watching during this October movie marathon week:

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

  1. I love the old monster movies. Last week, I watched the 1933 King Kong. Such a love story

    1. Yes, that one's a treat. I also like the Jack Black re-make, even though I'm probably in a minority on that.

  2. I can't seem to wrap my head around these horror stories, but I appreciate you sharing them, none-the-less.

    1. The old horror stories are often dated, I'll admit that, but I find them heavy on atmosphere, which I love.

  3. The old horror films were always good and chilling. The new ones are just scary, so I don't watch them. Enjoy your day, Valerie

    1. Yes, so many of the new ones depend heavily on jump scenes and gore. I prefer eerier tales and the chilling monster movies.

  4. I think that's a great way to spend some hot weather. Must not really feel like Halloween-or at least the kind I am used to. I do like those old monster flicks. Yesterday we had very hot weather too, but it is gone now, which I am happy about. I like these crisp fall temperatures. Enjoy the rest of your vacation and hope it cools off a bit so you can enjoy a little outside time. Hugs-Erika

    1. Some cooler weather moved in today, so it does feel more like Halloween now. We're expecting a high of 67 F, which is much more like what I expect in mid-October :)

  5. Trailer looks awful to me--LOL! I'll pass. But I do love the really old black and white monster movies because I find them rather silly and charming.

I did actually rent Kong Island. Not sure why because I usually find myself rather bored watching that genre, but I do peek now and then--LOL! Probably because I did like the original Jurassic Park. ;)

    1. I remember the original Jurassic Park! I saw it with my oldest when we rented it. He wanted to see it but I thought he was too young not to have someone watch it with him. That was before I was watching any horror movies, and I didn't appreciate the *STARTLE* factor lol

The old monster movies really are in a class by themselves, aren't they -not horror movies at all by today's standards

    1. I have so much trouble rating films, but yes, I agree this isn't in the top third of ones I've seen.
