Qahwa Coffee Bar

Qahwa is a coffee shop on the ground floor of the historic Claridge House Hotel (now condominiums). The Claridge House was built in 1924, closed in 1968, and didn't re-open until 1980 when it was renovated and turned into apartments. It was converted into condominiums in 2004, and there are a few units available if you'd like to live there. Located in downtown Memphis on N. Main Street, we could see the plaza fountains from our table:

I had a double espresso and a banana nut muffin, and The Daughter had an Americano and a chocolate muffin:

It was quite good, and the inside was fun:

You can sit at a table that's inside a safe:

Yelp gives it 4.5 out of 5 stars. Urban Spoon gives it a score of 94%. Trip Advisor has 4 out of 5 stars.

We lingered over the coffee a bit and then walked next door to see the QuiltSurround installation at City Hall:

The panels are made out of recycled city signs and hide City Hall's heating and cooling system.

I'm linking to other posts at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's T Tuesday gathering.

  3. What a fun place you found to visit this week, dear friend. Gosh, I'd love to sit inside the safe, too, mostly to say I'd done it.

We had two buildings downtown turn into condos. They were quite pricy, though, starting at over $250,000 USD for a one bedroom. Lots of amenities, though.

I'll enjoy an espresso and chocolate muffin with you and the daughter. The best of both, in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing this fun outing with us for T this Tuesday.

  5. OMG, I want to sit in the safe, too, and then I want to buy one of those flats, swim in the pool and just enjoy the view every day!

I have had Americanos for breakfast every day on this trip, it is the nearest one seems to get to a regular cup of coffee in England these days, as we know it anyway (except the beans have a different taste). In some places they ask if you want your Americano white, and that's not right is it? I have always thought it was a straight, black cup.

    1. I think that to add milk to coffee or tea ruins the coffee or tea. The fancy coffees that have milk, sugar, flavorings and other odd additions are surely made for people who don't really like coffee but who want to order coffee at the cafe. ;) I'm enjoying what seems to be the increasing ways you can order coffee out. Espresso, drip, pour-over.... I still sometimes use Mother's percolator. But I drink it all black.

In England, do they use drip coffee machines?

    2. I've never seen a drip coffee machine in a cafe, but I have a drip filter at home and love it. So much cleaner to use than a percolator or coffee machine ;)

    3. I was in one place where I ordered Filter Coffee, that was good, but not available anywhere else. I didn´t see any drip coffee machines, which I think is what we call kaffebryggare. Tea and coffee comes SCALDING HOT in England, I burn my palate every time. I like a tiny tiny dollop of milk to round off the taste, but not the amount they put in Lattes and such. That´s why I prefer to steal milk from the husband´s pitcher that comes with his tea, and order it black for myself. I like to be in control! LOL

    4. I never knew there were so many ways for restaurants to make coffee. I'd just gotten so used to the ubiquitous Bunn machines, and now they proudly offer pour-over and French Press and espresso... Fun :)

  9. What a neat way to beautify the air condition duct work and recycle signs, too! Very interesting story! Not sure if it would feel too claustrophobic to sit in the safe, but I'd love to see it anyway.

  10. The recycled "quilt" project is fabulous and your pause to refresh looks great too.
Not sure I could sit IN the safe...popping my head in for a look might be all for me :-)

  12. Your muffins look delish and the cup you have looks lovely. I wouldn't like to sit in the safe, i would be afraid to get shut in. I'm not claustrophobic, but that was my immediate thought...hmmm.
Those 'quilts ' are beautiful; what an excellent way to recycle. Happy T Day :D
