Rolling Stone gives it 4 out of 4 stars and says, "no one interested in the power and magic of movies should miss it." EW gave it an "A" and says it "may be one of the most disturbing movies ever made".
Roger Ebert gives it 3.5 out of 4 stars. Rotten Tomatoes has an audience rating of 93%.

I don't remember this one. The problem with depressing films is that they may be good, but who wants to see them? Its not watching the film itself, its afterwards when you're done. I might try this one sometime only because it got really good reviews though.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few reasons I'll watch a depressing movie: for the director, if it's on one of those "best films" lists I see sometimes, or if the reviews are really good. This one was by a director I've liked. He directed Pi, The Fountain, and Black Swan, just to name a few. And this movie came in a set with Pi, so I already had it on hand ;)

DeleteThis was quite a strange movie...yes, a little disturbing as I recall. I watched it for Ellen Burstyn...didn't know who Jared Leto was at the time. The actors carry this sadness, for sure. You could tell Leto had a lot of potential. Not your average film, but glad I watched it. :)
ReplyDeleteWasn't Burstyn brilliant in this! It really hurt to watch their downward spiral, but I guess because of my age I really felt for her and her friends. They didn't know what to do to help her, and she never realized there was a problem. A tragic story
