Orpheus (1950)

Orpheus is a 1950 French re-working of the myth.It is directed by Jean Cocteau and stars Jean Marais. This is fascinating. I watched it on Max, but it's also available free online via YouTube (embedded below) and Internet Archive.

Senses of Cinema has an interesting article. 97% of Rotten Tomatoes critics gave it a positive review. Roger Ebert has it on his list of Great Movies.

I remember how attractive abelia was to butterflies when I was child, and it serves to attract hummingbirds and some butterflies now. I have it planted along part of the fence on both sides of my patio.

  1. The abelia is lovely. I hope it doesn't get too tall though so the new neighbor chops off the top of it. :)

  3. Hopefully your new neighbor and her "gardening" won't interfere with your beautiful plant

    1. I was out there yesterday working along that side of my patio, and I can't for the life of me tell what she's doing *sigh*

  4. I don't like reading movies, however, I do like black and white movies. I will try this one. Really beautiful Abelia. Have a great day today.

    1. I'd love to hear what you think. I'm thinking "inspired by" would be a better description that "based on".

  5. I can't watch the video because it's not supported in our country (that's what the screen says) but I see your Abelia and it looks beautiful.
    All the best

  6. Thanks for putting where you watched it. So darn many places these days--lol!
Doesn't look like a plant I recognize. Anything that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies is good. Bees, too? :)

    1. Yes, bees, too. Abelia is evergreen here and quite common in landscape plantings.

  12. That is a beautiful plant. I planted bee balm and it attracts bees and hummingbirds and butterflies. Mine is in a pot, of course.
