A Picnic at Shelby Forest State Park

Picnics are my favorite things, and one day last month we took a bite to eat to Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park. We ate at a picnic area away from the lake at the edge of the woods.

We just grabbed a little something on the way -nothing elaborate:

After we ate, we drove down to Poplar Lake:

and spent some time observing the owl:

and the hawk:

at the Nature Center. The birds are injured and not releaseable and are used for educational programs at the park.

There are trails, but we didn't do any hiking this time. This park is about a 45-minute drive for us, and we just never go there. We have so many good picnic spots closer. I do want to go back soon to explore the trails.

  1. What an awesome way to spend an afternoon. It looks like a wonderful area, and the nature center must do good work, too. It would be a fun experience for youngsters, too. I hope you are going to share this for T today.

    1. I've been moving from the bed to the couch and back again. I can access Facebook on my phone but not my blog, so all computer-related activity came to a screeching halt, I'll be back in the posting saddle in time for next Tuesday :)

  3. This looks like a perfect day out. Our spring is too cold yet, and today it is pouring down. But any day soon! So exciting to see wild birds close up like that.

    1. It is nice to have close access to these birds. They are common around here, but rarely this close.

  4. I'm so glad you are back and feeling better. For some reason, I thought you were mad at me. Just call me Paranoid Pete.

BTW, I hope you have a chance to read the post on the Zoo elephants. I'm with you on wondering if we did the right thing by bringing them to Kansas, rather than finding a preserve.

    1. Elephants are hard to provide for in a zoo. Our zoo tries, but the elephants have so little space. It looks like your zoo has provided some good space -some room to move around- but the cages look too restrictive to me. I like the elephant sanctuaries best, I think.
