Seven Men from Now

For those who've asked, I've added an explanation of this blog's name at the top of the sidebar on the right. It says,

WHY "DIVERS AND SUNDRY"?
Because this blog does not consist of a single focus topic I chose the name Divers and Sundry where "Divers" means being of many and various kinds, and "Sundry" means consisting of a haphazard assortment of different kinds.

"I'd be obliged for a cup of that coffee." -Randolph Scott

Seven Men from Now is a 1956 traditional western directed by Budd Boetticher and starring Randolph Scott. You can never go wrong with a Randolph Scott Western. It's only an hour and 12 minutes long. Can I offer you a cuppa while we watch it? If you want authentic cowboy campfire coffee this link explains how to make it. I prefer mine filtered, so I'll be making a single cup of pour-over coffee. I'll be joining the weekly T Stands for Tuesday blogger gathering. Join me?

Slant Magazine gives it 3 1/2 out of 4 stars and says it bridges "the innocence of a genre’s past with the growing ambiguity of modern times." 100% of the Rotten Tomatoes critics give it a positive review.

I'm still enjoying making the ATCs and am learning as I go. I use some of the online challenges as inspiration, though I don't link up at their sites even when my ATC qualifies.

Last week's Think Monday Think ATC challenge was Books:

The Rainbow Card challenge is focusing on Orange this month, and this is what I came up with while thinking about that color:

The button sits up so far above the rest of the card that I was unable to get that pretty ribbon in focus.

This one:

started out as an attempt to make a fuchsia-colored background, but it ended up looking blues-related instead.

I made several cards without any embellishments in an attempt to focus on color and design:

The yellow one has stripes of bright neon yellow, but no matter what I did they showed up as white in the scan. The color is stand-out visible to the eye when looking at the card itself. I like these as-is, though I need to make a better effort to thoroughly fill in colored areas. These would also be good as base cards to add more to.

I looked back over some old Pick-a-Stick ATC challenges, and there are a lot of materials I don't have and won't get just for this, but there were some ideas I could use. This one required adding a pocket, outlining with pencil and then smudging, then adding something metallic:

I used a base card I was sent as part of a swap, used sandpaper for the pocket, and added a furniture nail leftover from replacing a chair seat.

This one required use of the color "slate" and using the steps 1) stamp, 2) drop, and 3) scallop.

One of the best parts about using challenges as inspiration rather than entering your link at their site during the challenge itself is that you can interpret them as you are led without the worry that people will judge you as not "in" enough to qualify for inclusion *wink*. I used gray for the background and stamped clouds with a piece of paper towel. I drew raindrops from cloud to ground, made scallops be part of the clouds and glued a piece of slate in the bottom corner.

I made two using aluminum foil:

I'm using what I already have around here, but I did buy a set of silver, gold, and bronze metallic markers at Target and have already used the silver and bronze.

I made this Valentine one:

having been inspired by this beginner 5-step process:

I've shared other ATCs here and have tagged each of those posts so they can be seen together.

  1. What a beautiful Valentine's card. I like the idea of doing something art wise without fear of judgement & trust me there's a lot out there ... I like your cloud rain card & I think the phrase from the blues card would work on this card as well. I've seen a lot of aluminum foil (tinfoil) being used for embossing.

  2. Randolph Scott is a good choice. I'll skip the cowboy coffee in favor of a nice cup of tea. You created a wonderful selection of ATCs. My favorite is Exploring books. I like the figure with the wild woman hair and her imagination radiating out of her head. Rather partial to the pen and inkwell, too. Happy T Day

  3. I'll have my coffee with a side of ATC's please. I think your idea of looking at challenges is great. I rarely get something done in the time frame for a challenge. I'm usually working on something else or waiting for the right challenge idea to pop into my mind.

  4. I really enjoyed this post-I was curious too about your blog name and I did not know that is what those words meant lol
I love Randolph Scott so a great movie choice and I have made cowboy coffee too-the guys all loved it. I still keep a vintage perk pot around for when the power goes out I can still make Hubs his coffee.
So happy you are sharing your atc's loving that-I am off to check out the video
    Happy T day hugs Kathy

    2. I'm glad you liked it. Randolph Scott is always watchable :) I remember the scene from Blazing Saddles where he says, "You'd do it for Randolph Scott," and the townspeople put their hats over their hearts and chant "Randolph Scott". Priceless :)

  5. I always look at challenges on blogs but never take part, although it is good for inspiration, I usually join in the challenges on splitcoaststampers as they are all friends and are all very encouraging.
    Have a great week

  6. You are soon going to have to make a box to hold your ever growing collection of ATCs:):) I have 4 photo boxes filled with ATC swaps and trades from over the years! And every so often I take a box and empty it to go thru each one and admire them again. They are not forgotten. Super variation of themes, subjects and styles here but I do love the first one and the valentine ones the best. Not into Westerns one bit but always interesting to see how you relate a painting or such to T Day. Enjoy your day!

  11. Your movie inspired T post made me smile. I always like your take on T each week. I'll drink my coffee from my 12 cup coffee pot, though. It's a great photo and perfect for this theme.

Your ATCs are wonderful. When I first started out, I had practically no supplies and very little knowledge of composition. Teaching the altered book class helped with the composition, and I slowly over the years have added to my materials, although I still prefer freebies and magazine images whenever possible. There are lots of freebie magazines out there, but the quality of the paper is sometimes not the best.

Thanks for your comment about the blogger problem Sharon mentioned. Since she had been gone for so long, it hit me as I was heading to bed this might be to what she was referring.

I also saw your comment about FL on Linda's blog post. If you want to live in a bug infested (think mosquitoes) sticky, humid, rainy place, FL is for you. It's nice in winter, but spend even a week there in summer and you will soon learn why so many FL residents are also snow birds, moving back north in the summer months.

Thanks for sharing your lovely ATCs and your coffee inspired movie with us for T this Tuesday.

  12. Great artwork for the week. I think you're the one who mentioned the sci-fi movie that I watched this past weekend, but I couldn't remember which blogger had it, so I'm sorry I didn't credit you. I like westerns, so I might watch that movie next. (I only watch the ones with no commercials. The movie that started after the great sci-fi that I watched had commercials, so I shut it off.) Happy T-Day!

  14. I love how you are taking the time to learn a new form of art. Youtube is how I learned mixed media. Isn't great that all these things are free? I know there is nothing like hands on but for those of us that don't want to pay for a in-person class, the internet is awesome.
    Happy Tea Day,
    Kate

  17. it´s so nice how you are on a roll with ATCs (i can relate to this, as i´m addicted to collages these days, it´s unstoppable *g*). isn´t that an uplifting hobby? i often think it spares me the psychotherapist;) sadly i stepped away from the "Trading" in A"T"Cs... the postal service is too unreliable meanwhile, so i only trade from face-to-face, which is seldom.
    have a great week!

  18. Wow! What a great post! So much to look at, and those ATCs are fab. I watched the video and it is inspiring me too. I am about to start pocket letters, which are 9 ATCs in a collector's card folder.
Cowboy coffee sounds a bit like the coffee we used to drink in Turkey. They pour hot water over the coffee in a glass, add sugar to taste and you stir twice, then wait until the grounds have sunken to the bottom then drink. I've always liked it that way.
Thank you for explaining your name. I suppose I didn't cotton on as in British English divers is spelled 'diverse' with an 'e' at the end.
    Happy (belated) T-Day,
    Lisca

  21. I love the Valentine's ATC, D. But really, I think they're all great. I love the way you're approaching the art form - with a childlike sense of discovery and enjoyment. That's a huge struggle for me.

Sorry I'm so late commenting on your T-day post. I made early rounds and forgot to check back or new arrivals. Oops.

    Belated Happy T-day! Eileen xx
