Lake Barkley State Park

Last week we went to Lake Barkley State Park in Kentucky for a vacation. It was a peaceful time away. The rooms in the lodge have balconies that look out over the lake:

We saw a lot of Great Blue Herons and Egrets, but this was the only picture I got:

Here's the view from the bed:

I love a place with trails, and I walked 2 short trails while I was there. This one starts at the back of the building where our room was:

There were critter signs:

but the only big critter I saw on this walk was a deer.

There's a swinging bridge:

The trail loops back to the lodge area, and these were taken from the concrete walkway that runs between the lake and the lodge complex:

You can see the building where our room was on the left:

What a beautiful place! I'll show the other trail in a separate post.

  1. This looks like an incredible place, and I would have loved to walk with you. BUT, I probably would have turned back when I got to the swinging bridge. It's an innate and irrational fear, but one none-the-less. It still looks like a wonderful place to visit and enjoy the lake, trails, and woods.

    1. I will say that this was the shortest and sturdiest swinging bridge I'd ever seen, and the distance to the ground underneath wasn't very far. I know folks who don't like bridges of any kind, though, so I understand how you feel.

  2. This looks like a really pretty place to visit. The lodge is very attractive- were the rooms rustic or updated? I bet you had some really enjoyable hikes. A perfect vacation. Hugs-Erika

    1. The rooms were modern, and there was plenty of room for the 3 of us. The bathroom was spacious. There was a hairdryer, coffeemaker, cable tv... The beds were comfortable. You can see a 360 degree view of the room here: http://parks.ky.gov/parks/resortparks/lake-barkley/reservations/barkley-virtual-tour.aspx That shows a suite. The room we had wasn't as large and didn't include the couch or desk. Our room had 2 double beds.

    1. It was! We prefer places fairly close, so we don't have to spend all day in a car. This was very nice :)

  4. You found a beautiful place to get away to. I've always liked the idea of staying in a "Lodge" although I've only had the chance to do that a couple of times. It sounds so old fashioned, like something out of a novel. I might have chanced the swinging bridge but I would have had to hold my breath. Holding your breath makes you lighter don't you know? Hahaha

    1. I think you'd have been surprised by the sturdiness and lowness to the ground of this bridge. It didn't swing, though there was a bit of give to it.

They had lodge rooms and cabins. Sometimes we stay in state park cabins, but we opted for lodge rooms this time because they overlook the lake. I think the cabins have fireplaces, which would be cozy at times of the year when the temps weren't in the 90sF.
