Hancock

Hancock is a 2008 superhero movie starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron. I liked this film just fine when we saw it a while back but now can't remember it at all. So strange that it made so little impression, but not every movie stays with you. I remember this as being pleasantly entertaining while it lasted, and sometimes that's enough.

trailer:

io9 has an article titled, "9 Ways Hancock Could Have Been A Pretty Good Movie". Empire Online concludes: "See-saws between straight superhero movie and parody, with layers of soap-opera fudge in between. A lot of solid scenes - but Hancock lacks the power of super-coherence." Time Out gives it 2 out of 5 stars and a negative review.

Roger Ebert gives it 3 stars and calls it "a lot of fun". Rotten Tomatoes has a 41% critics score and an audience rating of 59%.

  1. It sounds like you enjoyed the movie more than most of the critics. I've never heard of it, or even seen any mention of the trailer before today.

    1. My husband and son tend to keep me up on all the superhero movies, or I'd never have heard of it either. There are so many movies it's hard to keep up.

  2. There are so many superhero movies out there now. I have read articles on why this is, some think it´s "America´s" way of dealing with 9/11, but I don´t know that I am convinced. Maybe it´s something about wanting easy solutions to complex problems, and that´s about so much more than terrorism - although, come to think of it, that´s another easy solution to complex problems. Of course it never works. I used to love superheros as a child, in the comics, but the movies leave me cold. Too old, perhaps...;-)

    1. I think it's because people finally got tired of Westerns ;) and there were all those comic book characters just sitting there not being used for anything else. The Batman and Green Hornet tv shows started in the 60s when the Western was beginning to fade. They seem to be going the way of the Western, in that we've moved from undeniable hero figures to exploring their darker sides. I like some of the superhero movies. I like Batman better than Superman, for example, just as he's been portrayed on screen.

    2. I do have a soft spot for the first Batman with Christian Bale, where Gary Coleman also stared as Gordon. I like the Bat best when he is blue and a bit crazy, I guess.

    3. I like that one, too. I haven't seen the new Batman/Superman movie yet and will wait til it's available cheap. I'm not holding out much hope for it, but ya never know. Sometimes they surprise me.
