It's the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything from _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_, a novel by Douglas Adams. I see pop culture references to it quite often, most recently in Doctor Who and in The Big Bang Theory, but I don't see the 42 as public art in any other cities. Of course, I don't get out much ;)
Because this blog does not consist of a single focus topic I chose the name Divers and Sundry where "Divers" means being of many and various kinds, and "Sundry" means consisting of a haphazard assortment of different kinds.
I guess I still don't understand the significance of the 42, but I sure like how you seem to find them all over town.

DeleteThe meaning of 42 escapes me too. I'll have to click the link you left for Elizabeth.
