Hyperion
Hyperion is the first book in Dan Simmons' award-winning 4-book Hyperion Cantos series. I've loved these since they came out starting in 1990, and this is, iirc, my 3rd re-reading.
from the back of the book:
On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called The Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope -and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.beverage-related quote:
"The Consul turned down the other lamps and poured more coffee for those who wanted it. Sol Weintraub's voice was slow, careful in phrase and precise in wording, and before long the gentle cadence of his story blended with the soft rumble and slow pitchings of the windwagon's progress north"And with that quote I join the friendly, welcoming group at the weekly T Stands for Tuesday blogger gathering hosted by Elizabeth. Share a post with a drink reference, and join us for a nice visit.
The New York Times has a positive review of Hyperion. Prometheus Unbound opens with this: "I found Hyperion to be the kind of book I hope every book will be when I first crack it open." Tor says, "it’s beautifully written. It’s deeply absorbing, one of those books you don’t want to put down."
Best Fantasy Books concludes, "Hyperion is almost flawlessly executed, whether as a single coherent story, a series of novellas or a set of incredibly compelling character portraits." SF Book Reviews calls it a "masterpiece".

ATCs:
After completely ignoring ATCs for a couple of weeks it feels like I'm starting all over again. *sigh*
I've been looking for stencils sized for the ATCs and can't find any that small. I'm particularly looking for all-over designs and shapes and not figures of animals and such, if that makes sense. I can find 4" x 4" stencils but nothing smaller. Are there stencils out there that are 2.5" x 3.5"?

Chattanooga, part 4
After our visit to The Tennessee Aquarium we were ready for lunch so we set out on foot in search of food. We found some interesting art on the street along the way:
We ended up at the Blue Plate:
which is right on the Tennessee riverfront. The menu was tempting, but I finally decided on a turkey club sandwich (you'll notice I forgot to take a picture until it was almost half gone). It was delicious:
and strawberry lemonade:
Doesn't that look delicious? It was! I offer it as my link to the weekly T Stands for Tuesday blogger gathering. Join us by sharing a post with a drink reference and linking up here.
This was the view from our booth:
We were exhausted after our morning so returned to our hotel room for a bit of a foot prop. It wasn't long until we decided we wanted dessert and coffee, though, and the cookies in our supply bag just didn't have much appeal. We decided to take the free shuttle (the north end was next door in the garage where our car was parked) to the south end of the line and walk back towards the hotel until we found pie. We went in a book shop:
saw art on buildings:
and by the roadside:
We passed Warehouse Row:
and decided to stop in the Tupelo Honey Cafe:
The interior is comfortable:
Their menu looks like they have many delicious items, but we were just interested in dessert. And coffee, of course:
I had the Brown Butter Pecan Pie with chocolate ganache, and The Husband had banana pudding:
We headed back to the hotel on foot, figuring we'd stop and catch the shuttle when we saw it. That didn't take long, and before we knew it we were back in the hotel room. We found out there was a Democratic debate on that night, which provided interesting entertainment. I am on the far left-wing fringe, at least as U.S. politicians go, and I find politics fascinating.
We had a train ride planned for the next day, and I had never ridden on a train before!
I got my envelope mailed before we left on vacation, and these were waiting in the mail fr me when we had delivery re-started once we got back home. I was excited by the PIF treasures I received from Mia:
and by the happy package that Chris, the person I sent to, sent to me:
Wow! Y'all are a generous and creative bunch! I admit my stash consists of old catalogs, magazines, cards, and newspapers and whatever ribbon I've found at the Dollar Tree. These treasures took my breath away! I hope to improve my skills in creating more interesting, better constructed pieces with more texture and depth in the coming year, and these delights inspire me to that end. Thank you!

Children in the Dining Room
Children in the Dining Room:
by Henri Lebasque, who died on August 7, 1937. There should be a drink available with a meal, and yet I see none on the table. That strikes me as quite strange. Let's offer them some water, shall we?
I'm linking this post at Bluebeard and Elizabeth's weekly T Stands for Tuesday blogger gathering, where you would be welcome to join us with your own drink-related post.
I mailed my ATC for the PIF swap but haven't heard that it has arrived at its destination yet. I just got back from vacation and won't get our held mail 'til tomorrow. I'll catch up soon, I hope!
