The Whales of August (Amazon Prime and free on Tubi) is a 1987 drama film starring Bette Davis and Lillian Gish (in her last film) as elderly sisters. Also here are Ann Sothern as one of their friends, and Vincent Price as a peripheral member of the former Russian aristocracy. A wonderful movie, I wish I had watched it sooner instead of letting it languish in my watchlist while I watched horror movies and big splashy action movies and re-watched classic Doctor Who episodes, but there ya go. I've seen it now, which is what counts.

DeleteI have never heard of this film, but it sounds really lovely. I'm adding it to my watch list. It sounds perfect for a cold February afternoon.
ReplyDeleteIt was new to me.
DeleteI don't think I saw this one, but it looks good! Valerie
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm glad I came across it.
DeleteThis was really good! Actually one I would rewatch as it has been so long since I saw it. The actors--wow! I love movies like this. :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely rewatchable, I agree.
DeleteOh just about anything with Betty Davis and I am there. One of my all time faves.
ReplyDeleteShe's good in this. Of course, she's good in everything.
DeleteI'm glad it's on youtube. I'll have to look for this. I met Lillian Gish once -- I wish I could find the book she signed for me. She had a fascinating autobiography and much about her silent films, many of which I've seen. I'd love to see her in this.
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! You met her?! How exciting! She was a marvel, wasn't she.
