Scrooge, or, Marley's Ghost is a 1901 adaptation, directed by Walter R. Booth. According to Wikipedia: "The actor who played Scrooge in the film has never been identified."
One of the networks recently had Scrooge on as a Christmas show. Once I get my new computer, I may have to check this one out, since I had NO idea the book was turned into a film that long ago.
I think this is the earliest known film adaptation. It's incomplete, in the way that parts of old films and eben entire old films get lost, but what's there is about 6 minutes long. I think it's remarkable in how they get the story across in such a short and silent film.
