These days, I think some authors won't bend to an editor and think those doorstop books are better just because they're so long. I have book 5 of the Dark Tower by my bed right now. Wow! It's been a while since I last read the 2 you mention, but like you I remember those images :)Divers and Sundryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01759655568104782267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28337090.post-80285390560355479652017-06-18T03:08:51.748-07:002017-06-18T03:08:51.748-07:00The Old Man and the Sea by Hemmingway is one of my...The Old Man and the Sea by Hemmingway is one of my favorite short novels. Years ago authors were often paid by the word, encouraging longer works.bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11122361539939744451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28337090.post-45356885873418859462017-06-17T21:30:42.990-07:002017-06-17T21:30:42.990-07:00I remember reading Animal Farm and War of the Worl...I remember reading Animal Farm and War of the Worlds in high school. For some reason, they didn't seem short back then. Perhaps it was because I knew there would be a grade attached to them. There's a big difference between reading for pleasure and reading for a grade. However, I always enjoyed both because they had such great visual imagery.Bleubeard and Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10149710375520733752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28337090.post-84637468909768598732017-06-17T08:15:42.652-07:002017-06-17T08:15:42.652-07:00Short novels are a treat, aren't they. Sometimes I think authors aim to make their books longer for the sake of it when some careful editing might serve them better.Divers and Sundryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01759655568104782267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28337090.post-47481872333605899142017-06-17T05:36:44.176-07:002017-06-17T05:36:44.176-07:00I've read a few of these.Last summer I finally...I've read a few of these.Last summer I finally read the Willa Cather 'O Pioneers' and I just loved it. I think maybe some rereads is in order of a few of these. A good but short read is always nice after you've read a long book that took longer than you expected.
