Tarzan of the Apes

Tarzan of the Apes is the first film adaptation of the Tarzan novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The novel can be read online here or here. You can listen to it here. This film celebrates its centennial this year. Elmo Lincoln plays the adult Tarzan.

The New York Times has a positive review from the time of the film's release that says, "The picture as a whole, in addition to being interesting, also has a touch of educational value. An actor named Elmo Lincoln meets the difficult requirements of the hero satisfactorily."

  1. There is a channel on my TV that features Tarzan (the tv show) every day. Sadly, I have never watched it. Thanks for the link to the original book. I'm going to listen to it as I clean up my rather cluttered office.

    1. I was always a fan of the Weissmuller Tarzan. Those movies were shown on tv a lot when I was a child. I've actually never read the books.

  2. Fascinating. I forgot how they over played everything in those old silent films. That took me a few minutes to adjust too. I also loved all the animal shots-so wild, wasn't it? Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the view. Hugs-Erika (it was a great way to kill a useless hour at my desk at work...not feeling very productive for sure.

    1. I love how the old movies tend to be short and are so easily watched during a break or while I'm doing something else. I'm glad you enjoyed it :) The silents had to do so much with gesture and facial expression. It's no wonder some had trouble making the transition to "talkies".

  3. Interesting seeing this as a silent movie and it's amazing to think this film celebrates its centennial this year too. Happy Friday and weekend! J 😊 x

    1. I know! 100 years! They accomplished a lot in early films :)

  4. Imagine how little anyone in the US had seen of the African animals. This had to be such an exotic movie filled with danger. There's quite a gap between imagination and reality with the books (have heard but haven't read) and the movies, but they were cutting edge for their time.

She was a much better actor than he was--LOL! So were some of the side characters, for that matter. I don't think I had ever seen this first one. Thanks. :) Johnny Weismuller was my favorite, too! :)

    1. Weismuller Rules! They really were able to accomplish a lot in silent films, weren't they! It's strange to realize that Elmo Lincoln died before I was born.
