Tims Ford State Park Lost Creek Overlook Trail

The park staff claim this trail is well-marked, but I found several people also trying to navigate it who agreed with me that that's not an accurate representation. It's marked, but never where paths diverge; so you end up at forks with several choices as to which way to go and nary a marker in sight. Getting dangerously lost isn't likely, but losing the trail is.

The trail begins at the Visitor Center here and is 1.3 miles to the overlook:

The story about the car is that back in the day when this land was private property and the car was almost new some kids were playing in the car and knocked it out of gear. The car rolled down the hill, hitting the tree, and the owners weren't able to recover it:

There are several bridges:

Very little of this trail is close enough for good views of the water, but the woodland is pretty:

and there are some water views:

I saw deer:

You wouldn't call the deer tame, but there weren't particularly skittish and would stick around if I stopped walking or if we stopped the car to watch them. We saw a couple of fawns, one with a doe and one by itself. I'm sure the mother was keeping an eye on it.

The trail was blocked by a couple of downed trees at one point, but climbing over wasn't hard:

Reaching the overlook:

there are a couple of other trails that branch off, but we went back to the Visitor Center and sat in rockers for a bit

  1. It looks like a nice hike on a summer's day. A nice view at the end of the trail is always a good thing. This one looks pretty good for sure. :) Too bad the trail wasn't more clear. I think the rockers look appealing too. Especially after a walk on a warm day. :) Happy Thursday.

    1. Yes, it was a nice walk, and that view was nice indeed. The rockers were just the thing. It was a hot day!

  2. It sounds like you and other hikers were as confused as the trail. Too bad it wasn't laid out better, especially if the park staff don't know what they are talking about. Instead of Lost Creek, maybe it should read Lost Trail. But the view at the end was superb, and the old car held my interest. You know me. I LOVE rust!

    1. There are trails through there that weren't laid out by staff but are the result of repeated hikers noticing how close the water is and heading off in that direction. It does make the official trail hard to discern in some places. I don't know how often the staff walk the trails with an eye towards how it looks to first-timers. A few more directional markers would make a huge difference in areas where the trail [unofficially] forks.

  3. I enjoyed walking with you through the pretty woodland, over the bridges, passed deer and looking out across the water at those beautiful views 😀. Thanks for guiding me through the trail and how lovely to sit and relax in those rocking chairs are the end 😁. Happy Friday and Weekend! J 😊

  4. I have no sense of direction and can get lost WITH markers, so I'd be afraid of wandering about endlessly--LOL! Pretty place to be lost, though. ;)

    1. At least you always seem to end up on a paved bike path that goes back to the Visitor Center, so I'm confident the wandering would end up back there. Eventually ;)
