Mourn the Great Auk

The last pair of Great Auks was killed on this date in 1844. There was a single sighting of a lone bird after that, but they are extinct now.

Which animal will be next?

  1. This is so sad. Give a human a way to rid of an endangered species and s/he will find a way to do so. It's an incredibly cruel and unusual act that affects everyone and keeps the rest of the world from enjoying these beautiful birds.

    1. It's so maddening to read reports from folks bragging about kills of endangered animals. They are so proud of themselves, posing with their trophies :(

  2. And I have heard that almost 500 species have gone extinct since 1900. So sad. :(

    1. It's downright scary to look at them disappearing, and all the while people continue killing them and destroying their habitats :(

  3. Extinction is always sad, as there's no way to go back and get back what is lost. It would be nice to say there won't be anything next on the extinction list, but I doubt that will happen.

    1. I look at some animals and wonder how much longer they'll be around even with concerted efforts to save them :(
