The Black Tea Pot

The Black Tea Pot:

is a painting by Jonas Lie, who died on January 18 in 1940. He was born in Norway but moved to New York City via Paris when he was 13. The Black Teapot is currently on exhibit at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. The museum site says, "The canvas was painted in 1911 and acquired by the museum in 1913 soon after the work had hung at the now famous Armory Show. Held in New York City earlier that same year, the Armory Show constituted America's first large-scale exposure to the work of the European avant-garde."

Wikipedia says, "He is best known for colorful paintings of coastlines of New England and city scenes New York City," but I also like this autumnal still life.

There is a short biography here and another here. You can see more of his work here.

  1. You find the best tea art! Another new artist for me. I looked at your link to some of his other work. Really liked the landscapes. This still life seems to be an unusual subject for him. Thanks for the links.

  5. to answer your question: we have two gingkos my son grew himself by planting them in pots (about four years ago). simply because our garden is too small to plant a gingko there. he said he will plant them in a garden of his own someday (if this day will ever come;))
of course they grow slowly, because we don´t give them new pots every year.
they are not cared for throughout the winter, they survive or they don´t. so far they did.
    happy t-day!

  9. Like most everyone else, I have never heard of this artist before. I was so impressed with Lie's work, especially the Flood in Plainfield, New Jersey and After the Snowfall. They are so relevant right now. Of course the Black Teapot is gorgeous. I'm always in awe of the art you find for us to revel in for T on Tuesday. This is fantastic.

  13. I hadn't heard of him either, so thanks for introducing this artist. I love the painting. I'm not usually keen on still life paintings, but this one is an exception. It's colourful and dynamic.

  14. Amazing how he could get the tea put to look so shiny and glossy. I guess being a painter he knows all the secrets to do that. I love how you keep introducing me to some artists I have never heard of before. Happy T day. Hugs-Erika
