Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) is the original, later re-made in 1978. This one stars Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, Larry Gates, King Donovan, and Carolyn Jones (who played opposite Elvis in his best film and was priceless as Morticia Addams in the tv series). Also making appearances are Dabbs Greer and Whit Bissell. This one is a must-see.

trailer:

Moria gives it a full 5 stars. 1000 Misspent Hours says, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the quintessential alien paranoia movie. It is one of the most intelligent and original sci-fi/horror films of the 1950’s" and concludes, "I don’t like to throw words like “timeless” around casually, but this is one case where the use of that adjective is fully warranted."

Rotten Tomatoes has a critics score of 98%.

  1. Somehow I feel like I've seen this one, but for the life of me, can't remember it. Thanks for the review.

    1. The remake gets more play, but this one deserves to be known.

  2. This is the one I grew up with! Loved it! I watched it on the Saturday night monster movie night when I was a kid--along with all the old mummy movies and Draculas and Frankensteins and the 50 Foot Woman and Godzilla and so many old black and white movies. Those are the ones I enjoyed. Not as into the newer ones--LOL! Those old ones were a hoot! :)

    1. Yes, there's a lot to be said for those older movies, though there were stinkers back then, too. I have trouble finding new movies that aren't too gore-centered to suit me.

    2. Maybe that's why I prefer the old ones--way less gore, more overacting and camp. :)

    3. The gore factor can decrease a movie's effectiveness as horror, I think. We do tend to like the old Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman types of films. Maybe they had to work harder with black & white and now they just let the splatter do the work. Have you seen The Haunting (1960, I think) or Carnival of Souls? Not quite as old, but still effective without gore.

  3. I remember this film. Think I need to see it again. I forgot Carolyn Jones was in it. And yes, I loved her in the Addams family too. :) Hugs-Erika

    1. Yes, popcorn! And October puts me in the mood for the "spooky" movies.
