The Half Shell

The Husband, The Younger Son, and I decided to eat at The Half Shell recently. The Husband had never been, which I hadn't realized. It opened in 1973 at this location, and I've been several times over the years. You can see their menu here. Our waitress was helpful and attentive.

I had the fried mushroom appetizer, which was delicious:

and the lunch special, which was fried fish:

The hush puppies were a disappointment, but everything else was good. We were too full for dessert, but their desserts are especially tasty and worth going back just for that. This is a popular place for lunch, I know, but I've never eaten there at night.

Yelp and Trip Advisor each give it 4 out of 5 stars.

This post is scheduled in advance. I won't be able to participate in T Tuesday this week, but if you happen across this I can assure you of a warm welcome at that weekly gathering at the Altered Book Lover blog.

  1. I came looking as you usually join the Tuesday T gang. Your lunch looks delicious. I don't think I've ever had a hush puppy. Maybe I've had something similar by another name.

    1. Hush puppies are deep fried corn-meal batter. Kinda like cornbread. It's a southern "thing" and people differ about how they like them. Some people prefer them plain and some like a lot of onion or green pepper in them. They're often served (in fact, I might say _always_ served) with fried catfish, no matter what else is on the plate. Ihese were a bit heavy for my taste. There's a wikipedia article explaining them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hushpuppy

  2. I don't care if you can't leave comments because you aren't around. Your scheduled post allows me to add your name and link. This looks like incredible food, lots of fried goodness and calories galore. I haven't had hush puppies since I moved "up north" from southwest MO. It'd definitely a southern thing, I fear, although Long John Silvers may serve them across the county. I wouldn't know, because I try to stay away from fast food chains.

After seeing your menu, I thought how much cheaper our lunch menus are than yours. And I thought Wichita was expensive when I moved here from a very small town in MO. I did like your choices of both coffee and water. Looks like there might have been an iced tea in the mix, too.

Hope you don't mind that I linked you for T this Tuesday. Others should be able to drool over these deep fried goodies, too.

    1. This restaurant is not one of our cheaper options ;) My husband had the iced tea -unsweet in his case.

Thanks for linking me. I just feel bad about linking but then being unable to visit everybody else. Here it is time for the next one.

    1. These were wonderful fried mushrooms. I was the only one at the table to like them, though, and the serving size -especially for an appetizer- was _huge_!

    1. It's not a meal that bears repeating often, though I had fried catfish while we were on vacation, too. I'm not weighing myself right now ;)

  6. Those fried mushrooms look really nice, if a bit calorific. I have no idea what hush puppies are (apart from an old fashioned brand of shoes).
I hope the reason for not being able to comment is a nice one (like holiday), but it doesn't matter. We can drool over the lovely food while you do what you need to do.
Hope to see you next week,
    Happy T-Day,
    Blessings,
    Lisca

    1. The fried mushrooms were wonderful! Hushpuppies are a southern "thing" -fried cornmeal batter with seasonings- that would remind you of cornbread.

Yes, we had a week away at a state park in Kentucky. A peaceful time off. And then we got back to find our internet had taken its own holiday lol. Everything's back to normal now :) I'll see y'all tomorrow for T Tuesday :)

  7. oh that looks so delicious...I love fried mushrooms, and that is a big serving! funny how you can live near a local site of interest and never visit there. I live near the home of one of the U.S. presidents, and have never visited it! Nice that you and hubby got to go together...happy T day!

    1. Huge portions! I'd rather have less on the plate, but big serving sizes seem to be everywhere I go.

I love visiting historic sites, and I think a presidents homeplace would be irresistible to me.
