Johnnie's Drive-In

While we were in Tupelo looking at wedding veils -pause for ahhhhh- we went to Johnnie's Drive-In for lunch. Elvis has a booth here labeled as the one he sat in when he came here as a child. It was very crowded, and we had to wait for a table. We weren't seated at Elvis' table, sadly, and we didn't feel comfortable taking a picture of someone else's booth. There are photos online, and I'm linking to one here.

I had a hamburger, fries and a coke:

We got a kick out of eating where Elvis had eaten, and the food and service were good. Trip Advisor gives it 4.5 out of 5 stars. Yelp has a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars. Tiny Travels Through Mississippi includes it in their Tupelo tiny tour, has some good interior photos, and says, "The burgers were tasty in a real-food, just-like-you-remember kind of way. What a treat."

Join the party at the link-up at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog. There's a nice welcome and a variety of beverages waiting for you there.

  1. Well shoot! Too bad Elvis's booth was taken. I like a good old fashioned burger and they are hard to find around here. Every place wants to add this, that and the other. I just want a burger like I had in my childhood.

    1. Yes, these days putting mac&cheese or fried eggs on hamburgers seems to be all the rage. I -like you- prefer the traditional burger.

  2. How fun to eat at a place where Elvis used to go, even if you didn't get to see at his place. . Hope you enjoyed your meal! You have awakened my appetite for something hot, fried and savoury! Happy T Day, hugs Valerie

  3. ooh aaah very pretty veils = what fun and Johnnie's has quite a claim to fame there :-)
I imagine girls on roller skates delivering food outside there at one time in history too?
    Happy T Day oxo

  5. Burger, fries, and a Coke--the perfect diner meal! Looks like you had a good trip. Did your daughter find a veil that she liked?

    Happy T Day!

    1. Yes, she picked one, but they had such lovely pieces it was a hard choice. It was a good trip :) We're looking forward to a return trip to have the dress fitted.

  6. OMG it´s Tuesday! I completely forgot, being in the middle of starting-school-chaos and not having looked at the blog reader for days. Well, Happy T-Day!

Love the diner with the Elvis connection. I´d be curious about what he liked to eat; I have heard rumours about peanut butter & banana grilled sandwiches, which sounds weird, but in a good way.

My mum had a crocheted crown which was more elegant than it sounds, but none of her daughters has worn it; I guess we are not bent towards the romantic (nor married as young and pretty). I imagine your daughter looking absolutely ethereal.

    1. My mother eloped lol. I married at 23 and still have my veil that Mother made for me. A crocheted crown would be treasure. Maybe some traditionalist from the younger generation will want it.

I don't know what Elvis ate there when he was a child, but the pnb/banana sandwiches are said to have been a favorite. I've never had one, but there are recipes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut_butter,_banana_and_bacon_sandwich

    2. Oh bacon, too; that´s even better. Thanks for the link. I must make this for the husband. And play some Elvis for dinner... ;-)

  7. Yum1 I really enjoy a good burger out now and then; other than the "healthier" ones I make at home. Too bad you didn't get to sit where Elvis sat--did you visit his childhood home while in Tupelo? Those veils are gorgeous!

  8. Ooo, to eat where Elvis has eaten.... wow. Lucky you. Although it wouldn't be my choice of food, I would liked to have been there.
    Thanks for visiting me earlier,
    Have a great week,
    Blessings,

  9. Yes, that looks just like the burgers and fries we used to get when I was young. Only I'd have to have cheese on mine. ;) Happy T-Day!! :)

  10. It was fun to see another of the places Elvis visited or stayed. Too bad his booth was occupied while you were there. It must have been a weekend, because I can't imagine it being that crowded during the week, unless you went at peak lunch time.

Those were some truly lovely veils. What an amazing selection. Almost makes me want to get married (NOT),

Thanks for sharing your lunch at Johnnie's and your coke with us for T this Tuesday.

  14. Hello and Happy T Day! What a cute and fun place to eat, the food looks so yummy! So neat that Elvis had been there too, I love Elvis, my parents so him in concert right before she had me. Thanks for sharing and have a good week.

  15. Well, belated T-day wishes, sorry I am so slow in returning your visit, thanks for the comment.

A burger, fries and a coke in the place Elvis went as a kid.......exciting. It looks like an old fashioned hamburger too, not a pound of beef and a large salad stuffed into a bun.......my kind of burger....LOL
