Warfield Point Park

Warfield Point Park, just south of Greenville, Mississippi, provides a wonderful vantage point for viewing the Mighty Mississippi River. The chart on the right on the sign pictured above lists the worst floods in the history of Greenville. Though it came close -very close- the 2011 flood didn't displace the 1927 disaster.

There's an observation tower:

You can climb up the stairs to get a better view:

But the view is also fine on the ground along the boardwalk:

This sign shows you where you are:

There are little tidbits of information on the rope along the riverfront:

I live in Memphis and am used to views of the Big Muddy, but it's always fun to see the differences between places and look at things from a different perspective.

  1. I hope I get to see the Mississippi again some day. I do remember the muddiness, but also the impression of relentless power. It was so long ago, and my most vivid memory is from Hannibal, Missouri, where - naturally - I visited the Mark Twain Cave. I can´t remember who took me there; that´s the thing about memories one has no one to share with (and no photos of), they fade. I guess this one remains because of the Twain connection.

    1. I'd love to go to Hannibal! There's a national forest there and some nearby state parks I think would be right down my alley :) I haven't seen any of the norther stretch of the river.

  2. I can't believe I missed this post. What fun to see the "Big Muddy" from a different perspective. It calls to mind the time I spent in Memphis at Mud Island. So good to see another perspective on the river that shaped our country.

I learned a lot, too. I had no idea about the rocks. Of course, I know there's lots of silt.

So glad you found this place. I don't see how you saw so much in the short time you were in Greenville, but I'm loving all the places you went and ate.

    1. I'm not sure I believe that about the rocks.

I was surprised that there was so much in Greenville, to be honest. I don't even remember having heard of it before to notice.
