Breakfast of the Birds

This looks like a perfect way to have breakfast: overlooking the birds outside the window -Or are the birds overlooking her? In the painting you can't see her cup, but I know she has it nestled between her hands in front of her. That's really me there, sitting at that table, you see. I've spent many a happy hour bird-watching from my home. It's harder to do now that we have an enclosed patio instead of a yard. The mess accumulates, and provides quite a build-up on the patio furniture. I missed the bird feeder so much, though, that I put out some sunflower seeds this winter. I've been enjoying cardinals, blue jays, purple finches and sparrows at that feeder and mockingbirds and sparrows at the suet feeder.

The picture is of Breakfast of the Birds, a 1934 painting by Gabriele Munter (1877-1962). She is described by Wikipedia as "a German expressionist painter who was at the forefront of the Munich avant-garde". You can see more of her work at The Athenaeum.

The San Diego Museum of Art has a video overview of her work:

  2. That is a really lovely painting and I could be right there with you.
Birds provide entertainment for me on and off all day long.
I also have a nice view out into our back garden from here at my computer chair.
I got very excited to see a Spotted Towhee in our garden...first one ever that I've seen here in northern VA
    Happy T Day !

  3. I can just imagine that is you in the painting. I have a couple of bird feeders, but they are off the front porch and nowhere near a window. So sad, too, because I've never EVER had the opportunity to sit and watch birds, although, like you, I have a friend who put a couple of feeders near her kitchen table window and sits to watch them while she eats breakfast. I can just see you doing that, too.

Thanks for sharing this with us for T this Tuesday. Now go enjoy watching those birds!

  5. I think I could spend many hours sitting in front of that window too. As it is now I have a few birds that return to our yard and patio every year, believe it or not, they like the dog food.......LOL
Have a great week, and thanks for leaving me a comment on my blog.

  10. Very interesting film and lovely painting. Spiritual really is the word for it. It can be you, but it could also be my grandmother, who had a birdfeeder outside her kitchen window. It´s the only reason that I would like to have a house for, I think, so that I can have a birdfeeder outside my kitchen window! :-D

    1. I agree it could be any of us. I love the perspective looking at the scene from right behind her. I never understood how Mother could move to an apartment where she couldn't have access to a bird feeder. Of course, she thought she wouldn't be there long. She'd have chosen differently if she'd realized she'd be there over 12 years, but none of us can predict. I've decided to keep bird feeders despite the mess on this little enclosed patio. I'm claiming the joy of it and ignoring the mess.
