Happy Veterans Day

Not to be confused with Memorial Day when we honor our war dead, Veterans Day is set aside to honor all those who have served our country in the military. At Overton Park here in Memphis we have a place called Veterans Plaza, where there are statues commemorating service in various wars. The picture above was taken at Overton Park earlier in the year.

I admit I'm not a fan of folks with guns, whether sponsored by the military or not; and I'm opposed to what I see as the glorification of war in our current culture. Today, though, I lift a glass in memory of Daddy, who did what he had to do during World War 2 and then never much wanted to talk about it afterwards.

Here's to American valor. May no war require it, but may it ever be ready for every foe.

Please join the T(ea) Tuesday gathering over at Bluebeard and Elizabeth's blog.

"To Daddy... who did what he had to do."
    Cheers.

  2. My Dad, like yours, really never wanted to talk about his service in WWII. I agree with everything you said about guns. We have been at war somewhere most of my life. Sad.

  3. I'm so glad you wrote a post on Veterans Day from the American perspective. So many are sharing the story of poppies today, and I confess, I will too, in another hour.

Regardless how we feel about war, we need to honor those who served and those who didn't come home. I know so many people who have been in war. No one from WWII, but other wars. And they didn't want to talk about it, either. I'm so glad we finally realized these brave people were suffering from PTSD, and should get all the help they deserve.

Your post is beautiful, thought provoking, and right on point for T this Tuesday. And I'll raise my glass right along with you. BTW, from what I know of war (and that isn't much), I think that statue represents WWI, which "celebrates" its 100 anniversary today.

  5. I have just raised my glass to your Daddy too!
I am with you on not liking men with guns but if they hadn't we wouldn't be living the lives we have today.

  8. I think a lot of the men who were in WWII didn't like to talk about it, I know my Grandfather never spoke much about his time in a POW camp in Poland but like you, I remember him and all the others on days like this and think about what they went through to make a better world for their loved ones.

  9. Love this post. Like you, I´m not fan of guns, but have a burning interest in all things war; a way to handle my fear, I guess, and the current war in the Ukraine has made me realize just how afraid I am. My father was a child during the war, very close to the eastern front the whole time (never talks about it), and he dreamed of going to America when he grew up. He got as far as Sweden, for which I am grateful, as I wouldn´t have been if he hadn´t met my mother.

I wish there wouldn´t be any wars, but as there are, I´m so very grateful for those who fight against aggressors, even when they are not personally being attacked.
