Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit

I'd never heard of this superstition, but apparently you're supposed to say, "Rabbit rabbit rabbit" when you wake up on the first day of each month to bring luck. It's certainly not a Southern thing. I looked it up, and it seems to be more known in the northeast here and in Britain.

The photo at the top of the post is by OZinOH and is a photo of a sculpture called Dancing Hares by British artist Sophie Ryder. It's located in a park in in Dublin, Ohio.

  1. I have never heard of this superstition either. But I do feel lucky every time the hares come by, which they do a lot in the spring months. That is a great sculpture, joyous.

The only superstition I have is that I say "pepper pepper, knock on wood" and knock my head every time I hear myself sounding and feeling a bit too over-confident, or catch myself taking things for granted. I will recklessly lay keys on the table, walk under ladders, and cross paths with black cats...

    1. we don't get hares around here at all. we do get the occasional cottontail rabbit, but i haven't seen one in decades, we do "knock on wood," but i've never heard the "pepper pepper" part.

is it bad luck to put keys on the table?

    2. Yes, keys and shoes. Why shoes would go on a table I don´t know, except to be repaired. I don´t think the cobbler worries about this, though.

Some people say you should go "pepper pepper", throw salt over your left shoulder and spit in some or other direction if you see a black cat. I think these rituals get mixed up. :-D

    3. i'm totally unfamiliar with the keys/shoes on the table thing. at least that elaborate ritual gives you something to forestall the bad luck. i thought there was no cure for crossing a black cat. we throw salt over the left shoulder if we spill salt but not any other time. it's interesting how different the superstitions are.

  2. I've heard the rabbit, rabbit, rabbit but thought it was only on the first day of the New Year. Nice sculpture any day.
