Casablanca Cafe

photo from CasablancaMemphis.com

The Daughter and I had noticed the Casablanca Cafe on Poplar several times, and we tried them for lunch one day recently. I wanted to share it with the T(ea) Tuesday party, since the tea was such a unique taste experience for me.

I had the Chicken Schawerma:

You can see The Daughter's Chicken Kabob in the background of the picture. You can see the menu at this link. The food was wonderful! We each had the hot tea, which is described as "the best tea in Memphis" and is a black tea with sage, ginger and honey. They let us try it 2 different ways, with one being appreciably sweeter than the other. You can taste more of the ginger in the less sweet tea. We liked them both. In fact, we liked it so much we bought some of the loose tea (in that jar behind my plate you can see in the photo above).

The service was helpful and friendly, and they made us feel right at home. The price for both of us, including tax and tip, was just over $45, which is steep for us. When I go back, I'll try to order something cheaper from the menu. It is very good food, though, and the restaurant is even more beautiful than these photographs show.

The Urban Spoon gives it a score of 90% with 394 votes. Yelp gives it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars with 119 ratings. Tart and Teal says it's "fantastic".

  1. OOOOOH that looks so yummy!
The tea sounds fascinating, I like ginger.
The price IS a little steep for a lunch (for me too) but with those ratings I guess they have no problem charging the price.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a nice comment.
    Happy T-day

    1. They do have desserts, and that'd be a cheaper way to go. Happy T Tuesday :)

  2. You did get that special tea to take home too and it looks like a generous portion.
I am guessing Memphis charges metropolitan area prices found in so many cities.
    Glad you enjoyed it...
    Happy T Day to you

    1. Our sales taxes are sky-high here, and that doesn't help. The portion size was very generous, but I ate it all ;)

  3. I'd have been happy to have lunch with you and your daughter. The tea does indeed sound good. I have had tea with ginger and honey of course but never sage. I think we have some sage in the garden. I'm going to have to try and experiment.

    1. It was fun to try something so different and find I liked it. :) They sell their own bottled olive oil, too. I'll have to try that.

  6. Wow, I've been to restaurants like that before, where lunch was as expensive as one normally pays for dinner. But they had me at vegetarian couscous. Now I definitely want to go there if I ever make it to Memphis again. This looks like a FANTASTIC place, albeit a bit steep for lunch. I'm thrilled you had a good dining experience with the daughter, too.

Thanks for sharing this lovely place, food, and tea with us for T this Tuesday.

    1. It was higher than we expected, but I'm thinking it was worth it for the atmosphere and new tea. It was fun. :)

  11. Hello and Happy T Day! Thanks for sharing the fun dinner out you had. Looks like you picked a good spot even if a bit too pricey. How nice that you enjoyed the tea and brought some home. I've never had either of these but they both sound good.
