Cooling Off

One day recently, The Daughter and I spent some time together downtown. It was a hot day, and there were some people who decided that this public fountain space was perfect for cooling down a bit. We didn't get in the water ourselves, but it's delightfully refreshing just to be on a nearby bench feeling the spray and doing some people-watching.

You can see the Mississippi River bridge in the background of the photo above, in between the buildings.

Here's another part of the plaza where there are picnic tables:

Those walls you can see in this photo have water cascading down them. Very peaceful.

  1. Somehow I either missed that beautiful fountain, or it hadn't been built the last time I was in Memphis. We have a small circular one of those in one of our parks. I remember being on a committee that oversaw approval or rejection of that fountain. One of the arguments was that even the disabled could use it because most wheelchairs are waterproof. I thought that was a great selling point and it was the only one that persuaded me that day. Yours is much, much nicer than ours, but ours is in a park, so I can understand that, being downtown, a downtown association probably paid for it, or received a grant to have it built.

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. i don't remember when this plaza was built or when the fountains were installed or how it was funded. i did some online searching and still couldn't find that information lol. it's popular, especially when it's this hot outside.

  2. I love your photo of the public fountain. So cool and refreshing looking. What happened? Our July and August was so nice-no scorching temps and plenty of rain. Then here in Sept we are getting bombarded with hot dry weather.

    1. yes, this has been a strange summer. it seems dry for september. we're expecting the weather to cool down tomorrow so highs are only in the upper 80s. it makes me wonder what winter will be like.

  3. I wonder what Miles would think of the fountains. He isn't a fan of water, but this might be tempting for him to explore. That means I would have to go with him.

    1. the fountains are gentle, so maybe miles would enjoy just playing in the spray if it was a hot enough day. it does cool down the entire area, so you can enjoy the benefits of the water without even getting wet. and you'd _want_ to go with him ;)
