In Blu?

"In Blu" is what the can says. It's a fine coffee, but we don't like it as well as Peet's. I've had Lavazza ground espresso and liked it better than this, so I'm not sure how it differs. I'm getting tired of fine coffees we don't like as well as Peet's. It's one of those first world problems I'm grateful I have.

We bought the coffee at our local bookseller (The Booksellers at Laurelwood, formerly known as Davis-Kidd), although it was an odd purchase.

The coffee display is at the back of the store close to the "bistro" area. There are non-book items scattered throughout the store, including both food and non-food wares. I've bought this kind of thing before and never had any difficulty. Sometimes an employee will ask if they can hold something for me at the register until I'm ready to check out, and that's handy. This trip was more awkward.

I was at the book store with The Husband, and I picked up the can right quick with the intent of re-joining him for some leisurely book shopping. As I headed back to join him (coffee in hand) I heard people yelling at me. It seems you have to buy the coffee in the section of the store where the coffee is displayed. Yikes! How embarrassing! After I had paid for the coffee, I had to specifically request a bag to carry it in. But if they think I'm going to carry a paid-for but un-bagged can of coffee around with me and try to keep up with a receipt while I shop for books for who-knows-how-long, they are nuts. I can picture myself leaving the store, searching through my mess of a purse for the receipt to prove I paid for the damn thing.

They sell this same coffee at a local grocer where they've never had to yell at me to tell me where to check out. Guess where I'll buy Lavazza coffee from now on?

The cup is Fiestaware, and I think this is a vintage item. The shape isn't quite like what's currently available. I don't know anything about Fiesta dinnerware, but I love this yellow color. I picked it up at a local antique mall but don't remember which one.

  1. This sounds like the perfect tale to tell for Tea Tuesday. I had to laugh at the thought of you scrounging through your purse to find the receipt. What a horrible inconvenience. I would have insisted on a bag, too. In fact, I have NEVER left a store without a bag (unless it's a place that doesn't supply bags, like Sams Warehouse).

I'll join your for coffee today, too. And I'll go with you to buy your coffee at a local establishment that doesn't yell at you. I'm still laughing!!

  2. When we visited Switzerland a couple of years ago we drank Lavazza everywhere we went because that is what they served and Oh Boy was it ever delicious especially with steamed/hot milk.
What an experience you had kind of nerve wracking I'm sure!

You have me curious about PEET's coffee now.
Thank you for visiting my Magpie's Nest and leaving your nice comment!
Hope you're having a very fine Tuesday!

    1. my daughter brought lavazza back from her trip to switzerland, and that's how we were introduced to it. it is wonderful! i was glad to find it available locally. peet's is our current favorite. you won't go wrong giving it a try.

your magpie's nest appeals to me, and i've subscribed thru my reader. i'll be back. thx for the welcome :)

  3. I'm a staunch PEETS fan and it takes a lot to make me even try another brand. What a mess that bookstore/coffee shop is. They must turn people off. Our county is a plastic bag free zone and you have to pay 10 cents for a paper bag. I'm slowly remembering to take my own reusable bags everywhere.

Darla - off to drink her cup of PEETS.

    1. i do love peet's (i think you first suggested it to me, so thx!), but we like to have a bit of variety.

actually, that bookstore is the only locally owned bookstore close to me, and it's universally loved. i think a sign saying "purchase items on this rack in the bistro" would not go amiss. ;)

i often decline bags, especially if it's a small purchase and i'm headed straight to the car. i re-use the plastic bags as garbage can liners. they are thinner and more biodegradable than the bags bought for that purpose. paper sacks get donated to a local food pantry where they are re-used. our city hasn't addressed the issue yet.

i'm enjoying my peet's at the computer this morning. :)

  4. I don't think I've ever tried Peets. My HB buys our beans from the Starbucks store, in 10 lb. bags. Pike's Peak is the blend and it is the delicious. It's the same one they use for brewing their in store coffee. We like our coffee very strong and robust. I cannot abide most of the coffee served in restaurants, esp. fast food places. Too weak!

    1. i like strong, robust coffee, too. i'm surprised at how few eating places serve really good coffee. i've never bought starbucks coffee by the bag (that i remember.... hmmm...), but i'll try their bagged pike's peak. thx for the suggestion :)

  5. So funny - I just returned from Italy and the friends we stayed with made Lavazza coffee in the morning. But theirs was in a gold package. It was really good. They added a tiny bit of grappa in theirs but I passed. Imbibing Italian "moonshine", how ever small the amount, sounds like a potentially disastrous way to start my day! You could try Illy coffee (at Fresh Market) if you haven't already or McCarter's at http://www.mccartercoffee.com/.
