Guilty Pleasures

I had seen the Anita Blake vampire books in stores but had never read one, and when I saw The Elder Son with this first in the series I asked if I could borrow it when he was through reading it. I'm glad I didn't pay good money for Guilty Pleasures. The sleaze quality in this Laurell K. Hamilton vampire incarnation is a bit high for my taste. The wikipedia entry on the series says

Due to the increased sexual and relationship content, the later books are sometimes shelved in romance

but I can clearly see it coming even in this first book. I've never been able to develop a taste for romance; perhaps my active distaste gets in the way? I won't be reading more.

from the back of the book:

No one knows the dark desires of the soul better than New York Times bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton. In Guilty Pleasures, she introduces Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter. Anita's small, dark, and dangerous. But when the city's most powerful vampire comes to her for help, Anita is faced with her greatest fear--a man capable of arousing in her a hunger strong enough to match his own...

It figures that Anita Blake sleeps with stuffed penguins....
